I was just on Windows 8, and installed Pidgin, and it was able to connect fine to a XMPP service I use. I go to Ubuntu, try the same version of Pidgin (it was preinstalled anyway with Lubuntu), and I'm unable to send messages or enter group chats.
I've tried Pidgin on Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and Lubuntu, and on 2 different machines, and it just doesn't work properly :/ Any suggestions?
Hi,
Until a few days I had no problem in connecting to facebook chat with pidgin (using XMPP protocol as facebook helps says).
Now, every day a message appears:
agunet@chat.facebook.com/pidgin disconnected
Service unavailable
anybody know why ? And how can I fix it ?
thanks
I recently installed Pidgin and tried to install pidgin-facebookchat. Ubuntu software center now says that pidgin is corrupt so I press repair but nothing gets fixed.
I've tried sudo apt-get purge pidgin but I get this error:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information...
I've had countless friends using Pidgin/OTR that can't authenticate with me. It seems to only be a problem on Facebook (I think). Google's XMPP works fine with authenticating with OTR. Kinda weird since it shouldn't depend on the protocol, right? What's going on?

Thanks in advance! I am a new user of Ubuntu and I realized that I might have installed a broken pidgin.
Last evening, May 12th, the Pidgin developers proudly presented the brand-new and improved Pidgin 2.7.0 multi-protocol, multi-platform, instant messenger client. The new version brings many fixes for the Yahoo! and Yahoo! Japan, AIM, XMPP, MSN, ICQ, Gadu-Gadu and Bonjour protocols, but also some very nice and interesting features (see below for detail...
Pidgin is a nice chatting client that is pre-installed in a lot of Linux distributions. Pidgin supports many chat platforms like yahoo, facebook, irc, AIM ... but unfortunately, the popular social network Twitter is not on this list.
However, with the help of a plugin called pidgin-microblog, you can update and check twitter and some other social networks like Identi.ca, Status.net ..
