http://forums.fedoraforum.org – We bought a new computer and installed Fedora. I don't remember which release. I tried to configure the sound with the alsamixergui. No microphone detection, no matter what I did. I gave up. I was encouraged to try again. This time I used alsamixer (not gui). There was a microphone selection option which I changed from 1 to 2 and voila, it worked. Why didn't I see that before? I went back to alsamixergui and found the microphone selection option, but I couldn't see the setting, nor could I change its setting. I sure hope this little bit of information helps somebody else. I recently upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 to 12.04. My Samson C01U USB microphone, which has worked for many years on Ubuntu, now is having problems.

The symptom is as follows. After a reboot, the microphone works as expected. Recording with Audacity is fine. Then, after some indeterminate amount of time, the microphone disappears from the system.

I installed 12.10 on an Acer AOD250 machine, and it works really well(far better than I thought). But the Mic is still acting a little odd. I open the sound settings and the microphone there picks up nothing, along with Skype, though I ran Audacity and it gave me an option to choose the Mic(HDA Intel: ALC272) and it works just fine. I have a Blue USB microphone. It works well. $ lsusbBus 004 Device 004: ID 0d8c:0005 C-Media Electronics, Inc.I installed sox and  vorbis-tools, so that I could record on the command line. $ arecord -f cd -t raw | oggenc - -r -o out.ogglead to a silent ogg. I have tried to use phonon in system setting to make the microphone the recording device. I changed to the VLC backend.

I can not enable the +20 boost for my microphone using alsamixer in the 64 bit Beta 12.04. AlsaMixer identifies the device as NVidia CK804 and identifies the "Mic Boost" setting as on/off +20, but the up/down arrows do not change the setting. With the gain on the microphone set to the maximum, it is barely audible and effectively unusable.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 on my Toshiba Satellite P305 notebook with 2.6.31-12 kernel and have one little problem. My buld in microphone doesn't work. Then i try to record some sound, all, what i see is a little noise. The build in microphone it self exist in alsamixer and it set on maximum. It has worked before, then i have Windows Vista on this notebook.

I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a Acer Aspire One ZG5 (AOA 110), then Skype, and I can't make the microphone work. I tried this method with alsamixer

I am trying to get my microphone working. I am using Statler now and for the most part (till now) it has been great.The microphone worked in Crunchbang when I use it to talk through Skype but, I have tried all the alternative sound card options to no avail. I did notice that it keeps checking itself off when I look at the settings in the Mixer.How do I make the Mixer setting permanent?
