Please help me. I'm curious about but VERY new to Ubuntu and Linux in general.
Short: My system has 2 OS: Win 7 x64 and Ubuntu 12.10. I'm getting 2 Windows boot options: "on dev/sda1" and "on dev/sda2". What does this mean?
Hi,
I have a lenovo thinkpad X230T that came with windows7 installed. Before wiping out the disk and doing a fresh linux installation I wanted to make a dual boot for a while.
The problem is that I don't have any windows CDs to repair the MBR after installing grub because windows was preinstalled.
Any suggestions on what to do?
thank!
I have a 2006 Dell Dimension 9200 which came preinstalled with Windows XP. In 2009, my son, unbeknownst to me, installed Ubuntu on it and subsequently upgraded grub to grub 2 (I think). The bottom line is that I cannot boot Windows XP on it. On power up it shows me the following options:
1. Chainload Windows XP
2. Ubuntu ....
3. Ubuntu ....
4. Memory test ...
5. Memory test ...
6.
As I am new to the linux scene, I just wanted to know how more hardcore linux users think of other OS's...specifically, Windows and OS X. I know most will say they hate windows, as I have already heard a few times, but how do you guys feel about macs?
I have been using Linux for more than 2 years now. I had hp pavilion dv4 laptop and Ubuntu 12.04 was working great. I recently purchased HP Envy 4 - 1104tx which has Windows 8 preinstalled. I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 but since it is not much compatible with UFEI, I downloaded 64 bit iso of ubuntu 12.10. Made a liveUSB using UnetBootin 583.
All laptops I see these days (on Newegg, for example) come with Windows preinstalled. Where can one buy laptops either with no operating system or with Linux preinstalled? I recall Lenovo offering this a few years back.
I've bought myself a new pc which comes with a Windows 8 preinstalled and I want to install a linux distribution onto it, ubuntu 12.04 LTS would be just fine. I've tried booting it from a USB (linux pendrive) but it seems the computer won't detect it. It's a packard bell easynote te laptop. I've also tried to install it with a virtual machine but the vm screen went black.
Dear fellow Linux users,
I have a computer that came preinstalled with Windows 7. I have since installed Linux (yipee!) on the hard drive.
My Windows OS gives me a way to update the BIOS using the laptop manufacturer's program (some exe file). But I need to know if it's possible to change the BIOS from outside of Windows (either in Linux or some limbo-land).
Thank you.
Hello Ubuntu Community,
I've read some posts in the forum, and some people have actually deleted their Windows OS. I haven't decided upon doing that yet, but I'm curious on how you do that. So, how do you delete windows?

Oh by the way, I replaced ubuntu with Lubuntu just yesterday. I heard from a friend the UI is a lot like Windows, and indeed it is.
