after remove zeitgeist, there is no unity in Ubuntu

http://askubuntu.com – Because zeitgeist continuously access the hard disk, I removed zeitgeist package completely. After that, when trying to log into Ubuntu, there is no more unity option, only Genome, Genome (no effects), etc. And even Genome doesn't work normal. Say pressing tab doesn't switch window, cannot open folder in the explorer. I tried to reinstall zeitgeist. The problem remains. When I run unity --reset in Genome session, the sidebar appears, the unity seems back. But if I close the command window that runs "unity --reset", the unity disappears. And I still don't have the option to log into unity next (HowTos)

-rm -rf ~/.local/share/zeitgeist

-installing unity-place-applications, unity-place-files

-logout/login

There is no privacy setting blocking zeitgeist recording any file.

In .xsession-errors:

Out of a sudden after I logging in to the 'Ubuntu' session Unity or maybe Compiz doesn't start anymore (actually I'm not sure wether it is Compiz or Unity).

This simple tutorial will explain how to restart unity and unity-2d in Ubuntu. Normally we need to restart unity only when meet a “no response” problem.

Icons gone from Unity 3D 44 weeks 5 days ago

All my icons har gone from Unity 3D, but present in Unity 2D. The icon for the Dash is also gone. All icons are present IN the dash, but when I add them to Unity the icon is suddenly invisble.

Everything works in Unity 2D.

I'm trying to remove unity from a ubuntu desktop, and later install MATE.

So I have an idea of what I did wrong, I am just not sure how to fix it.

After removing it, I cannot reset unity and it does not work.

Even after purging Unity and reinstalling it, I cannot seem to replace the missing files.

I tested out Unity 5, and of course, it broke things, so I tried downgrading by

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge sudo ppa-purge ppa:unity-team/staging

It removed Unity completely.

apt-get install unity

seemed to work, but the login screen now offers only Gnome.

How do I get back to Unity 4?
