Out of a sudden after I logging in to the 'Ubuntu' session Unity or maybe Compiz doesn't start anymore (actually I'm not sure wether it is Compiz or Unity).

All my icons har gone from Unity 3D, but present in Unity 2D. The icon for the Dash is also gone. All icons are present IN the dash, but when I add them to Unity the icon is suddenly invisble.

So I have an idea of what I did wrong, I am just not sure how to fix it.
I used the Unity Glass mod:

After removing it, I cannot reset unity and it does not work.
Even after purging Unity and reinstalling it, I cannot seem to replace the missing files.
$unity --reset

I tested out Unity 5, and of course, it broke things, so I tried downgrading by
sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:unity-team/staging
It removed Unity completely.
apt-get install unity
seemed to work, but the login screen now offers only Gnome.
How do I get back to Unity 4?
