Folks, within Terminal, I am unable to chown, chmod, rm -Rf, or shred -vfuz to a file. I can however "echo xyz > fileName. I can create, delete or alter other files.
I realize this should be simple; haven't been LInuxing for a while. I can't get access to a mounted vfat partition.
I've been trying to wrap my head around chmod/chown (both for those wondering) for hours now with no luck...
All I want is to be allowed to change my files permissions so I can run executables with WINE and delete the virus after it nested in my .Trash-999 folder.
What is the terminal command line to unlock my system? Completely.
I have a USB FAT32 drive that is on /dev/sda2.
Hey everyone,I am using Archlinux and Awesome WM. As my file manager I use SpaceFM. My problem is that i have a external hard drive (1TB) and i can't delete any files.
Deleting files/directories is done by selecting them and pressing F8 or Delete. By default it will be moved to Trash. ............ Shift+Delete will delete the file permanently.
It is not working for me on ubuntu PP. I want to delete to trash with DELETE and permanently with SHIFT+DELETE. How to make it work?
hi
just trying to learn linux here and have some comfusing moments.
it is my understanding that if you own directories and files you may
change the group, ownership, and permissions on all of these as you desire.
however, in my case I cannot make any changes in my setup on group, ownership
or permissions on any of my files or directories.
As I understand "deleting a file or folder" basically > moves it into the hidden .Trash folder. Then to empty the trash the command is issued and it is deleted.
I have linked a new USB drive with my system and i am not able to copy any file to it. I tried to change the permission by using below command:
/media$ sudo chmod 777 0000-7D6C
"0000-7D6C" is the drive name. But it gives below message:
chmod: changing permissions of `0000-7D6C': Read-only file system
Can anybody help me please.
