But the device continues to dominate in emerging markets, such as Africa, where access to third generation cellular — let alone 4G — is not even close to being widespread. ABI Research says GSM (2G) mobile subscriptions now account for 62.7 percent of mobile subscriptions in Africa, while 3G, in both CDMA2000 and WCDMA flavours, only represents 11 percent of the overall market. Digital metrics firm comScore today released its most recent mobile market share report, detailing trends in the mobile industry for the three month period ending in September. The survey of over 30,000 mobile subscribers in the U.S.

Mobile money is a big deal in emerging markets. When a farmer can simply SMS payment for a cow or two people can transact business by swapping airtime, that changes the entire dynamics of an economy. So it’s little surprise that some research just out today indicates how big the market is going to be. And it’s all done on plain old feature phones.

It looks like just 10 percent of mobile data traffic will be based on 4G networks in 2017, according to Cisco Systems’ annual mobile forecast. It’s significant growth from the extent of today’s 4G deployments, which make up just 1 percent of global connections. But with 4G LTE devices like the iPhone 5 becoming common in larger economies, we may feel the technology rift between early adopter count

As Android continues to grow its market share on both smartphones and tablets throughout the world, one location where it is enjoying immense success is China. The latest report from Analysys International estimates Android now commands 90 percent of the Chinese market. Analysys’ estimate is based on data from both device sales and ownership.

If you thought smartphones were ubiquitous now — and in certain places they pretty much are — prepare for a whole lot more people to be coming online on their phones in the next five years.

Worldwide mobile device sales reached 428.7 million units in the second quarter, representing a 16.5 percent increase from 2Q 2010, while smartphone sales grew 74 percent in that period, according to Gartner. Android saw the biggest increase in smartphone share, jumping to 43.4 percent, while Microsoft dropped to 1.6 percent, says the research firm....
