[64 bit] Issues with downloading files

http://ubuntuforums.org – hi all, i'm a new ubuntu user and am hoping someone can help me with my issue. i have ubuntu v.12.04, 64 bit running on an asus u41sv laptop. it's installed as a dual boot with windows 7 64 bit. as far as i can tell, i have the latest ubuntu updates installed. basically, i get errors in large files (academic files ~5-6 Gb) that i download from a server, or copy from a hard drive. once the files are downloaded, i find that text from other files on my hard drive are introduced into the downloaded/copied files. at first i thought it was a RAM issue, but i don't seem to have this issue when i do (Hardware)

External Sata Drive issues (Ubuntu 10.10) I currently am using Ubuntu 10.10 in a multiboot setup with windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5933.

A few days ago I connected a hard drive, via a USB-to-SATA adaptor, to my laptop to back up some files from my Laptop (I've done this countless times before with no issue).

I currently am using Ubuntu 10.10 in a septa-boot arrangement (Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10, Solaris, Mint, Backtrack 5 R1, Mac OS X 10.6, Suse) on a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5933.

Today I connected a hard drive, via a USB-to-Sata cable, to my laptop to back up some files from my Laptop (I've done this countless times before with no issue).

When files are copied from Windows 7/8 NTFS partition, it throws the following error on some files.

"Error splicing file: Value too large for defined data type"

These files are not random. The copy operation consistently fails on certain files. Some of these files are jpg images with reasonable sizes. Obviously there are no errors when copied to USB drive through Windows 8.

I initially tried running Ubuntu off of a USB flash drive but the files got deleted, now when i boot my laptop it shows both Windows 7 and Ubuntu operating systems but the Ubuntu system says its missing a file and cant run it After the files where lost i downloaded Ubuntu on a CD and installed it into my hard drive following the instructions on the installation menu but the same error message show

I have a 1TB hard disk running windows 7 on my Dell Laptop. I partitioned it into two drives one having 900 GB and the other drive having 100 GB. I installed Ubuntu alongside windows 7 and ran it successfully. The dual boot also worked for the first two times but after that when I opened my Windows drive in ubuntu it showed no files.

Of late I had been thinking of having a fresh install of Ubuntu. So I cut-pasted all my required files and folders in my E drive. Then I decided to not to have a fresh install and just let it be.

I am currently trying to use Ubuntu 9.04 live CD (it's what I had when my computer took a dump) to copy some Windows files from an old drive to a new drive. I'm using cp -Rvf source dest. The issue I'm having is that during copying, the process will hang on files of varying file extensions (.exe, .cat, .url).

Okay so using the smart option, my harddrive has 15 bad sectors, all because of a very bad hard drive. I need to pull some files from my gf laptop before resorting to buying and tossing the old drive. Im using the latest ubuntu version as my live cd. However i can not mount the hard drive because of these errors.

I desperately need help. Apparently over the past 2 week God hates me and has caused the following: My Windows/Ubuntu Dual Boot machine to fail, and my Hackintosh (OSX on an HP HDX18t) to still be working hard drive wise but will not boot.
