I just installed hardy onto my Dell a few days ago, I've tried several methods to get my nVidia 8600 GTS to completely work with the GNOME display, but all attempts have failed. (I want my hardware acceleration for desktop effects and music visualizations) Initially when I installed Hardy, I selected to enable the restricted nvidia driver, and everything worked fine until I did a full reboot.
I installed Kubuntu Quantal 64-bit fresh a few days ago, and I just today activated the binary nvidia driver. Before, I was missing animation effects for the desktop cube and blur (among others) but I didn't really pay any attention. But now I figured by installing the binary driver I would have these effects.
I have fanless Gigabyte card with 512 mb RAM, and it really works well with Ubuntu 8.04. I have tested GoogleEarth, SecondLife, FlightGear, and TORCS and they all perform nicely with the binary drivers.

I recently updated my PC, included in said upgrade was a Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 560 Ti video card, unfortunately I now find myself unable to turn on even basic level desktop effects let alone start compiz.

I think that I will buy the Gigabyte GeForce GTX-260 OC 896MB DDR3 because I have seen that nVidia works better with ubuntu than ati, right?
Hey guys I just got a new Dell XPS 14 ultrabook and installed ubuntu 12.04 x64 on it.
I've already installed bumblebee and the bumblebee-NVIDIA package via the repo but I'm hoping there is a better way to make use of the GPU than having to specify each time I want to use it.
Ideally I'd like the Dessktop environment to utilize the graphics card so the visual effects are more fluent.
