I was using the default open source driver with Gnome classic, but when I upgraded to the closed sourced one using jockey-gtk/additional drivers everything messed up! It failed to activate the driver. Here is the error log.
Wobbly windows or any other compiz effect won't work now. I can't even move a window!
I have an MSI Radeon HD 7850 card. MSI provide no Linux support, and the AMD driver gives me an Unsupported Hardware watermark that does not show up in screenshots.
I uninstalled the proprietary driver and found that Unity 3D no longer works, and I really only picked Ubuntu because of the excellent shortcuts provided in the recent versions.
So, today i've got a fresh install of 12.10 x64 on my pc.Everything was fine except video driver.I've downloaded video driver from ati's website.Installation was successfully too. Then i did reboot, and after reboot compiz won't work.

I am using Ubuntu 12.04(32-bit) and I installed the AMD Radeon drivers from the Ubuntu repos using Additional Drivers. After installing the proprietary driver I experienced a lot of screen tearing. I have agp radeon HD 3450 graphic card. I've tried using proprietary driver but i couldn't do a bunch of stuff, movies stuck, etc.. Anyway now i use open source driver from ubuntu repositories, the one that is installed with system.

I have an integrated Radeon HD 4200 and it works great in Ubuntu 9.10. The open source driver, the fglrx driver from the Ubuntu repository works as well. I also installed the latest proprietary fglrx driver from ATI, 10.1. Works fantastic even with...
I see that my machine (Radeon HD 6290) has the option to choose either the X.Org X Server driver or the AMD proprietary driver:
I want to know which one is the recommended one in term of performance in general? Do one of them have an edge over the other? And apart from performance, is there any stability issue with them in general? How often are they updated?
I wonder what the state / performance of the open source ATI driver is now, when compared to the closed source driver for 'old' cards.
currently, I'm stuck with Ubuntu 8.10, as that's the last edition that comes with the 'old' ATI drivers, that support my ATI Mobility FireGL V5200 card. (which is 'old' according to ATI/AMD, even though it's a 3 year old top-of-the-line card).
