How can you remove Unity?
i just started using Gnome-shell instead of unity, and am loving it. I find unity hard to go back to. If I stay with gnome 3 what unity stuff can be uninstalled that ruin my system. I am on 11.10 if that helps
Ubuntu 12.04 comes with Unity, by default, based on Gnome 3.*, new features in Unity interface such as HUD seems to be cool but many people still doesn’t like Unity. Gnome Shell Interface is another great option for them. Since, both the interfaces are built on the top of Gnome 3.* – they have no compatibility problem at all.
There has been quite some discussion (rightfully) about precise an unity 3D not working with nvidia-drivers, I have not yet found any comment re nvidia and gnome-shell. (If there have been any, please excuse).
For love or money I could not get unity 3D to work with a GS 7200, 64-bit system. Once I install gnome-shell from the ubuntu repos I got 1280 FPS, everything else 3 D worked like a charm.
Ubuntu 11.10 is based on Gnome 3 – both Unity and Gnome Shell interface works on the top of Gnome3 in 11.10 (it was not the case in earlier version such as 11.04 – that’s why Unity and Gnome shell were not compatible, anyway it’s not a problem anymore).
I want to try Ubuntu (tried different distro's many times before), but none were really to my liking. I always seem to be drawn to Ubuntu, thanks to the PPA's and software. What I don't like is Unity, particularly the Dash.
When I come to the ubuntu 12.04 lightdm login screen, I get several options for logging into desktop environments.
There is Unity and gnome and gnome-classic etc...
When I select unity, it logs me into Unity and
When I select gnome, it logs me into UNITY O_o
I also notice that even after selecting the gnome3 session , the icon on the login box is the same as the unity icon.
Make Gnome look like Unity
Hello All,
On my previous installation of Ubuntu 12.04 I was using the gnome classic desktop(no effects), but it looked and functioned just like unity 2d.
I would use unity 2d but the video playback is choppy in full screen, this is an older laptop, gnome no effects does not have this issue.
Ive tried to set the startup applications to include the unity launcher and
I am currently using GNOME Shell, Unity and GNOME Classic on Ubuntu 11.10.

I updated my Ubuntu 12.04 PC and see 3 packages are hold to upgrade. gnome-desktop3-data is one of them. So I installed it manually, but it is remove eog, unity, unity-greeter, a lot of indicator stuff, etc. So my system doesn't boot anymore. How can I revert this changes or fix them?
