12.04 Upgrade failure due to disk space: 3 possible solutions??

http://ubuntuforums.org – I am getting an upgrade failure and the reason seems to be a lack of disk space. After some investigation via Google, it seems that the problem is really that the INODE address capability is full (or nearly full). The solution (1) given is to increase the size of the appropriate partition (in this case /) using GPARTED. That is okay and I could do it but this is a three system PC (12.04, Debian, and Windows 7, so I am reluctant to start moving the partitions around. How about one of the following: 2) Could I set up a new partition and move /usr (this seems to be the directory that is the (Hardware)
