(12.04) Sound works but no device shown in the Sound settings

http://askubuntu.com – Following a troubleshooting post I've found out that my driver is recognized in fact but is not listed at the sound settings and I think because of this my cinnamon sound applet will not appear. Altough my device does not appear in the Sound settings I get sounds (for example youtube and skype is working) but I can not increase/decrease the volume... I tried enabling login with root, login-logout and then login with user, restarts, following other ideas saying to fix this but still no sound devices listed... still it works (browser, skype...), alsamixer works. Any idea on how to fix this? l (HowTos)

No login and logout sound.

Login sound --------------- following file found missing. /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo/desktop-login.ogg

Where can I download it?

I have no idea of logout sound. Please help. TIA

My problem: sound has been working great for 2-3 months until 2 days ago, when I installed some recommended updates.

I have 12.10 installed on a Thinkpad x230. It works great except for sound. I do have sound in the login page, but after I log in and get to the desktop, everything is perfectly silent.

I went through all the guides, nothing is muted, alsamixer looks ok in the console etc, but no sound plays and no errors are reported that I can see. I tried restarting pulseaudio and alsa but no change.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Classic interface on my ThinkPad laptop. My sound card is a Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller.

Now, while using ubuntu, the gnome mixer (gnome-sound-applet) disappears randomly and the volume up/down buttons on my pc stop working.

Hi folks On F11 a USB sound card got recognized immediately and began to be used. On F12 the same sound card is listed but still all the 'dings' and 'dangs' of the OS as also all browser ( youtube ) sounds are heard from the PC speakers.

I'm using Fedora 11, kde desktop, and the alsa sound system, everything completely up-to-date via yum. Sound works with the exception that in order to get a reasonable volume from my applications (any applications), I need to set the master volume so high that the system sounds, like login/logoff chimes, are soooo loud I'm worried I'm going to wreck my speakers.

I am running Skype installed via yum: skype-2.0.0.72-fc5.i586 on F11 x86_64 My sound is working perfectly under VLC etc. but I cannot get anything out of Skype. Test calls produce deafening silence.

I am really unclear on how the sound stuff works.

Iv'e read a lot of People are having problems with the system sounds don't play. I can play sounds when going into ; System Settings\sound\ sound effect tab There are no options here to select sound themes or anything like that. This plays sounds and I can listen to music, youtube..

Skype - Webcams and sound... 3 years 25 weeks ago

Hello All,

I installed skype with the help of the skype wiki on en.opensuse.org/Skype (using zypper to install extra necessary packages).

So, Skype now opens A-ok, but I have 2 problems:

1) NO SOUND 2) My 2 USB webcams don't work.
