So I first tried the Flash drive Ubuntu to see how it responds on his machine. http://crunchbanglinux.org – I have successfully got a laptop (Compaq nc6120) and a netbook (Samsung N140) crunching away with Statler and I really like the calm ... absence of eye candy. The netbook in particular is definitely working better, both wifi and 3G work with less fuss than with Windows. (HowTos)
