Technology: Enabling Temperature Sensors in Linux

admin on August 6th, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

Most computers these days come with a myriad of sensors to monitor the temperature of your computer. These sensors are generally located on the processor and the motherboard, and you might also have sensors on your video card. On top of that, all S.M.A.R.T-enabled hard drives have built-in temperature monitoring.Read more

New Linux Foundation Meeting for End-Users

admin on August 2nd, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

The Linux Foundation has had several public meetings before, but they were really only for Linux developers and their best friends. Now, the Foundation is holding one for end-users: the Linux Foundation End User Collaboration Summit.

The meeting will be held on October 13 and 14th at the Desmond Tutu Center in New York City. The idea is to get end users and community developers together to try to co-ordinate what users want and what developers plan on delivering.

Before booking your tickets for NYC though, this meeting will be far from open to everyone. The event is limited to 150 individuals. And, by end-users, the Foundation isn’t talking about home users, it’s talking about CTOs, system architects and senior IT representatives from major companies, non-profits and the government.

What Ubuntu Thinks of a TinyTuxbox

admin on August 2nd, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

I’ve been meaning to log some, I think I’ll call it… Linux type stuff, to do with the TinyTuxbox for a while. Here’s my attempt to look at what Ubuntu makes of this little box.

First, the CPU (from /proc/cpuinfo):

processor : 0
vendor_id : CentaurHauls
cpu family : 6
model : 13
model name : VIA Eden Processor 500MHz
stepping : 0
cpu MHz : 498.706
cache size : 128 KB
fdiv_bug : no
hlt_bug : no
f00f_bug : no
coma_bug : no
fpu : yes
fpu_exception : yes
cpuid level : 1
wp : yes
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge cmov pat clflush acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 tm nx up pni est tm2 xtpr rng rng_en ace ace_en ace2 ace2_en phe phe_en pmm pmm_en
bogomips : 998.77
clflush size : 64

The interestingness here comes from the fact we have a 500MHz Via Eden with 128k cache and just under 1000 bogomips which (although it shouldn’t be) is often used as a trivial performance metric of a processor. Next, lets have a look at what’s on the PCI bus (courtesy of lspci):

9 File Managers for Linux

admin on August 2nd, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

Konqueror - Default file manager in KDE3, Konqueror was replaced by Dolphin in KDE4. Very powerful, Konqueror supports profiles, split windows, several view modes, plugins and much more features.

Krusader - Another powerful file manager for KDE, Krusader has an interface similar to Midnight Commander, starting by default with two panels (the so-called ‘twin panel’ mode).
Official website

Dolphin - The new file manager in KDE4, Dolphin aims to be easy to use and provides basic features for file management. Although the official homepage claims that Dolphin focuses on usability, I found it harder to use than Konqueror or Xfe, for example. But since I don’t use it much, I guess that’s just because I’m not used to it yet.

Home Automation - Windows or Linux?

admin on August 2nd, 2008 | File Under Linux ariticles, Recommended -

The age-old question, Black or White, Muscle or Economy, Good and Evil.

Windows or Linux?

There is no simple answer to this, unless you count this one: It depends

When someone asks me this question, I like to ask them another question in return: What kind of car do you need?

The last time someone asked me this question there was actually three possible choices: Windows, Linux and Apple.

My version of this is:

An apple computer is a SMART car.

It has style, is expensive to buy and don’t expect to carry around your entire family and bring home the spoils of your last visit to the grocery store for a family of 4. Your wife will love this car and you will be lucky if you actually get to drive it at all.

A Linux computer is an 18 wheeler.

It’s not the fastest to start, but it will carry anything from A to Z, don’t expect your wife to learn to drive it and even less to shift gears unless you are sitting right next to her. It comes standard with cruise control. You could drive it into a brick wall and watch it survive (a few scratches to deal with) and be ready for more.

A Windows computer is a Westfalia camping van.
