https://bbs.archlinux.org – Awesome, thanks for your help guys. Didn't need to reinstall in the end - there's a display config file where skunktrader indicated, and it had the Laptop marked as Active and the Viewsonic as inactive - quite how that happened I don't know. No picture with hardware acceleration on mplayerview story

https://bbs.archlinux.org – I don't really use mplayer, but I noticed with VLC that I had to turn off hardware acceleration in VLC preferences for VLC to work.  Might need to do something similar in mplayer when not using vaapi. heroes of newerth install, nothing but problemsview story

https://bbs.archlinux.org – I can install the new package from the AUR just fine but I can't launch it. I get a segmentation fault error. I've looked on the HoN forums and some people have fixed this by making a startup.cfg file in ~/.Heroes of Newerth/game/ but it didn't work for me. Apparently newer NVIDIA packages have messed soemthing up. (HowTos)
