The disk drive is recognized in the BIOS and when inserting a (windows) boot disk it is able to read and boot from it. When hitting the eject button while booting, the cd will eject. Once booted in Ubuntu 11.10, the inserted cd does not appear. (Hardware)

These look like my old favourites, except they seem to need a mouse to navuigate around. With my ububntu system a couple of ubunbtus ago, I could access the top menu with a simple press of ALT-F1 , and move through this with the arrow keys. (Hardware)
