I didn't realise that it was a 64 bit system at first and tried installing 32 bit ubuntu with all kinds of problems. http://www.linuxforums.org – I went into applications/preferences, and changed the desktop to gnome default screen, and it showed a file box, and when i turned it off and on, it didi exactly as yours did ? Only ever used windows operating systems, and now i have a blank screen, in a nice brown colour, and the only action i can do is left click, and change desktop background etc !!!! (HowTos)
